The cashmere comes from the high plateaus of Asia. Significant supplier countries are China,Mongolia,Tibet and Nepal. Today, little is supplied by the Kashmir Province India, from which its name is derived. Cashmere products of this area first attracted the attention of Europeans in the early 1800s.
The fine (dehaired) undercoat fibres is produced by a goat (Capra hircus laniger). This goat lives at altitudes above 12,000 feet. At this altitude, the natural Pashmina fibres are extremely fine, between 10-15 microns in diameter, or 6-8 times thinner than a human hair. Cashmere is the most luxurious natural fibre in the world.
